Crochet Sunflower Keychain

Materials

  • Double knit yarn (brown, mustard, and green)
  • Small amounts of pink, white, and black yarn for embroidery
  • 12 mm security eyes
  • Keyring attachment
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch marker, darning needle, and scissors
  • Fiberfill

The Center of the Sunflower (Brown Yarn)

  1. Work six single crochets into a second chain from the hook or a magic ring.
  2. Increase in each of the six stitches for a total of 12 stitches.
  3. Work one single crochet, followed by an increase, repeated around for 18 stitches.
  4. Work two single crochets, then an increase, repeated around for 24 stitches.
  5. Work three single crochets, then an increase, repeated around for 30 stitches.
  6. Work four single crochets, then an increase, repeated around for 36 stitches.
  7. Single crochet in every stitch around, for a total of 36 stitches in each of rounds 7 & 8.

Assembling the Center

  1. Make a second identical brown piece, but don’t snip the yarn.
  2. Insert the security eyes between rounds four and five on the first piece.
  3. Align and join the two brown pieces with 36 single crochets around the edge, leaving a gap.
  4. Stuff with fiberfill and close the gap.

 

The Petals (Mustard/Yellow Yarn)

  1. Attach the mustard yarn to any stitch on the side of the brown center.
  2. Petal Pattern: Slip stitch into the next stitch, chain one, then in the following stitch, work a double crochet, a treble crochet, a picot stitch, another treble crochet, and another double crochet. Finish by working a slip stitch in the next stitch to anchor the petal.
  3. Repeat this pattern all the way around the brown center.

The Leaves (Green Yarn)

  1. Make a slip knot and chain 12.
  2. First Half of Leaf: Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and the next chain, followed by two half double crochets, three double crochets, two half double crochets, and two single crochets.
  3. Second Half of Leaf: Chain one and turn, then work a single crochet in the base of the last stitch and the next stitch, followed by two half double crochets, three double crochets, two half double crochets, and one single crochet. Slip stitch into the last stitch to finish.
  4. Leave a long tail and make two more identical leaves.

Assembly and Embroidery

  1. Use a crochet hook or darning needle to attach the three leaves to the back of the sunflower.
  2. Embroider small white lines around the security eyes, pink blushes on each side of the face, and a small black smile.
  3. Attach the keyring to the top of the sunflower with brown yarn.
