Crochet Ball Ornament

You can make it in any color, size, or texture — ideal for decorating Christmas trees, garlands, or gift packages. It’s also a great stash-busting project that transforms leftover yarn into something beautiful and reusable for years to come.

Materials

  • Any type of yarn (scrap yarn is fine)
  • Size 3.5 mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Stuffing (scrap yarn, old ornament, or poly-fil)

Crocheting the Rectangular Piece

  • Make a slip knot and chain 11.
  • Starting from the second chain from the hook, single crochet in each chain across for 10 stitches.
  • Chain 1 and turn your work.
  • Single crochet in the back loop only across the row for 10 stitches.

  • Continue chaining 1, turning, and single crocheting in the back loop only until the piece reaches the desired length.
  • The original uses 18 rows for a 9.5 cm by 4.5 cm rectangle.
  • Chain 1, cut the yarn, and pull through to secure, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembling and Stuffing

  • Thread the long yarn tail on a yarn needle.
  • Fold the piece in half and sew the long edges together using whipstitch or mattress stitch to form a tube.
  • Sew a gathering stitch around one open end, weaving in and out through the loops.

  • Pull tight to close the hole, then knot and secure.
  • Turn the piece inside out.
  • Stuff the tube firmly with filling material until it forms a round shape.
  • Attach a new yarn strand and repeat the gathering stitch around the remaining open end.
  • Pull tight to close the hole and knot to secure. Hide yarn tails inside.

Adding the Hanger and Optional Bow

  • Make a slip knot and chain to the desired length for a hanging loop.
  • Cut the yarn and pull through.
  • Thread one tail through the center top of the ornament, then the other.

  • Knot both tails together securely and weave them in.
  • For a bow, make a chain in a contrasting color, tie it into a bow, and sew it to the top of the ornament just below the hanger.
  • Secure and hide yarn ends.
